Traverse de Tramuntana – Trans Mallorca
The Balearic island of Mallorca, with pleasant temperatures all year round, has already been discovered by a large number of cyclists. Although the island is less known among mountain bikers, it also has more than enough opportunities for this group. On the northwestern part of the island is the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. Here you will find steep climbs, rocky passages and many kilometers of singletrack. The mountains have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List for almost ten years and that is completely right in our opinion. Mountain biking is possible here from sea level to well above 1000 meters. We tour along authentic villages, where agriculture has been practiced for many years. The area breathes culture and there is a very relaxed and hospitable atmosphere. In short, huhThe Tramuntana Mountains are best explored from the MTB!

The Tramuntana Mountains
The Serra de Tramuntana has a rich, cultural and agricultural landscape. Everywhere you can see dry stone walls, special waterworks and old buildings. In addition to these cultural treasures, the area simply has a very challenging network of MTB trails. From the peaks and ridges of the Tramuntana Mountains we have several times a beautiful panoramic view of the sea. This trip is available in the months of May and October, this way we avoid the extreme heat of the summers in Mallorca. On the other hand, the temperature in our travel periods is very pleasant for a multi-day bike ride.
The first and last night we stay in a hotel in Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the island. During our cycling days we spend the night in hotels and guest houses on the route. On day two we finish at the monastery of Lluc, where we will spend the night in the monastery itself. Our multi-day tour ends at the hotel in Palma.
In a south-westerly direction
Day 1 – outward journey
We meet at the airport of Palma de Mallorca, from where we take a bus to the hotel. If time permits, there is room for a tour of the city. We have dinner with our local guide.
Day 2 – to the Monastery of Lluc
In the morning we travel from Palma de Mallorca to Pollença, a town on the north side of the island. Our six-day MTB tour through the Tramuntana Mountains starts from Pollença. The first part of the route leads directly over a path between land and a rugged steep coast. At the first peak we have a nice view of the northern tip of the island. We descend and spend the night at the monastery in Lluc.
Day 3 – to Sóller
We continue our way towards Sóller, a town in the middle of the Serra de Tramuntana with an attractive square and a beautiful classical church. Along the way we look out over the sea and the famous Gorg Blau gorge. To get just below the highest peak of the island, the Puig Major, we have to push our bike for fifteen minutes. This results in beautiful views and a nice descent. Our accommodation for the night is in the harbour, a few kilometers from Sóller.
Day 4 – round Sóller
In the morning we start climbing directly from Port de Sóller. At the top we have a beautiful view of the bay where we spent the last night. We visit Sa Calobra, a beach that is surrounded by two high cliffs. From there we can walk a bit into the famous Torrent de Pareis gorge, before continuing our way back to Sóller. We spend the night again in the hotel located in the bay of Port de Sóller.
Day 5 – to Esporles
From Sóller we start with a challenging trail that slowly turns into a playful and hilly singletrack. Our route runs along Deià, according to many one of the most beautiful villages on the island. We climb a bit over a ridge and then descend on singletrack to our accommodation in Esporles.
Day 6 – to San Elm
We start the day with some climbs and eventually descend all the way to the coast. Here we take a dip in the crystal clear sea. We follow a route that runs along the coastline and arrive at the village of Banyalbufar. Further on, from above we have a wonderful panoramic view of the small island of Dragonera, just off the coast at San Elm.
Day 7 – to Palma de Mallorca
The last day, and also longest, takes us back to Palma de Mallorca. Hilly paths and small climbs on the road alternate. We almost finish this trip with a very challenging and tasty singletrack, one of the better of this week. Finally, we descend on a cycle path with which we reach Palma de Mallorca and the hotel.
Day 8 – return trip
From the hotel we are taken to the airport in Palma. This is where this journey ends.
Through the mountains and along the coast
This trip is intended for the intermediate, advanced or expert mountain biker. We cycle through the Tramuntana Mountains for six days and make at least 1000 vertical meters per day. The route runs over technically challenging terrain and the views are fantastic. Parts of the route give us a view of the sea as well as the untouched nature and the rocky and wooded landscape. The culture, the Spanish food, the authentic villages and its inhabitants cannot and will not be missed during this trip.
Level of this trip
On average we mountain bike more than 40 kilometers a day, with about 1500 altimeters. This number can vary greatly from day to day. Count on a maximum number of 2200 altimeters. You must be fit enough for this trip, at least two rides a week is desirable. If you are already controlled over steep and technical sections, then this trip is for you!
