In one week we traverse the French Provence, from the small Barcelonnette to the Mediterranean city of Nice. We drive along the edge of the Mercantour National Park. A nature reserve with an unprecedented diversity of mountain peaks, views, flora and fauna. We don’t cycle on just any trail, this route has a very high number of kilometers of singletrack, both in the climbs and the descents. The rugged landscape leads us through valleys and over rocky peaks. After a long day in the saddle there is room for a refresher in the mountain rivers and we spend the night in a typical French gte or mountain hut.

Mountain biking in Provence
Provence is a popular area in both summer and winter. For nature lovers, the Mercantour National Park is a real highlight. The national park and the surrounding area is remarkably rugged and therefore ideal for a multi-day mountain bike tour. In addition to the rugged landscape and wildlife, there are also beautifully clear mountain lakes. All in all, an enormously varied area, where you can feast your eyes on. The accommodations in which we stay are located directly on the route. Once we stay in a mountain hut and the other nights in gîtes in small villages in the valleys of Provence. Our finish is on the beach in Nice. After 7 days of biking through beautiful Provence, it’s time for a dip in the Mediterranean.
Route through the French Alps
Day 1 – outward journey
We meet at the airport in Nice. On arrival there is a van waiting, which transports us as a group to the starting point in Barcelonnette, a municipality in Haute-Provence. In Barcelonnette we stay one night in a hotel and have dinner with the guides, before we start the route the next day.
Day 2 – to the top of the Col d’Allos
The first day already has a good number of altimeters, but we slowly warm up. Besides the fact that we will cover the largest part by bicycle, we will also have to walk parts with our bicycle. We spend the night in a mountain hut at the top of the 2250 meter high Col d’Allos.
Day 3 – to Entraunes
The day starts with a long descent of the Col d’Allos. We cycle over alpine meadows, through larch forests and reach peaks with fantastic panoramic views. On the route are a number of medieval fortresses that we will visit. After a third and again long descent we arrive in Entraunes. We spend the night in a gîte in the valley.
Day 4 – to Châteauneuf d’Entraunes
We immediately start climbing today and are rewarded with a beautiful view at the top. Part of the route runs along a steep rock face, where we will have to walk with our MTBs for about 20 minutes. Arrived in Châteauneuf there is room for an extra loop for the enthusiast.
Day 5 – to Les Launes
We need to be sharp immediately and start with a technical singletrack trail. Today we also drive up a part on the asphalt, that is the only choice. When we reach the top of the Col de la Couillole, then follows An of the most beautiful runs of the week. We spend the night again in a gîte, this time in Les Launes.
Day 6 – to Saint Dalmas
In the morning we visit the town of Beuil, a charming place with a Provençal feel and a number of ski lifts. We continue our way towards Saint Dalmas, encountering red colored rocks and grazing herds along the way.
Day 7 – to Utelle
We follow the route of the famous cross country race Transvésubienne. This route is known for the beautiful views of the valleys, the terrain is rocky and technical. On the last peak of the day we have a view of the Mediterranean Sea for the first time. We descend to our overnight stay in Utelle.
Day 8 – to Nice
The vegetation changes and we gradually find ourselves in a Provençal landscape. In the last kilometers it is mainly downhill towards the promenade in Nice. Together we take a dip in the Mediterranean Sea and this brings this trip to an end.
The trip ends at the beach in Nice. You have the option of flying back directly from Nice to the Netherlands or staying another night in this coastal town, the choice is yours.
Over the ridge
This trip is for the avid mountain biker who is looking for a challenging multi-day trip. France, and Provence in particular, has a lot to offer: rugged landscapes, (generally) pleasant temperatures, picturesque villages and so on. With a little luck we will see one of the many wild animal species near the Mercantour National Park during our trip.
Level of this trip
On average we mountain bike more than 40 kilometers a day, with about 1500 altimeters. This number can vary greatly from day to day. Count on a maximum number of 2200 altimeters. You must be fit enough for this trip, at least two rides a week is desirable. If you are already controlled over steep and technical sections, then this trip is for you!
