On the border of Slovenia, Austria and Italy

Slovenia is perhaps one of the most beautiful destinations in Europe for lovers of sporty travel and untouched nature. We start our MTB adventure in Kranjska Gora, a small but lively village north of the Triglav National Park. The well-known winter sports area is converted into a bike park in the summer. To the north, on the border with Austria, are the Karawanks. An elongated mountain pass full of challenging singletrack. Continuing south, we pass through the Soča valley, famous for the bright blue Soča river. Also a great start for a mountain bike tour. As we complete our round around the Triglav Mountains, we pass endless trails on Italian soil. Before we drive back to Kranjska Gora we make a stop in bike park Krvavec.

6 days of trail riding in Slovenia

Day 1 – Outward journey

You travel to Slovenia on your own. At the end of the afternoon we check in and meet at the hotel bar in Kranjska Gora. After dinner we discuss the program for the coming days and check the equipment.

Day 2 – Three countries in one day

After a hearty breakfast we get on our bikes and start with the first ascent. With a great view of the western Julian Alps we climb about 500 altimeters, to the mountain Peč (1508 m). We are at the three-country point where the borders of Slovenia, Italy and Austria meet. From here we have the choice of several trails of different levels. We arrive in the village of Rateče and cycle on to Planica, known for its ski jump. After a short climb we drive back to Kranjska Gora on a smooth single track.

Day 3 – Karawanken and Vrsic Pass

We are picked up by a shuttle and taken to the top of the Karawanken, the mountain pass that forms the border between Austria and Slovenia. We enjoy the impressive view of the Triglav Mountains for a while before we start the Robe Twist. A great 5km single trail that takes us back to Kranjska Gora. After lunch we are taken up to the highest mountain pass in Slovenia, the Vrsic pass at 1611 meters. We drive back to Kranjska Gora via a flowing trail of almost 7 km through the impressive landscape.

Day 4 – The trails of the Soča valley

We start the day with a transfer, via the Vršič pass we drive to the Soča valley. With the intense blue Soča river that meanders through it and the Triglav Mountains in the background, this is perhaps one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia. We arrive in Bovec, an outdoor sports village where you can enjoy great mountain biking. With the help of a shuttle we will look for the most beautiful trails of the Soča valley. After the last descents we check in at our hotel in Bovec and have dinner at a good restaurant in this cozy village.

Day 5 – 12 km of pure pleasure

After an early breakfast we drive further through the valley and are dropped off at 1300 meters. We continue to climb under our own power to the top of Monte Matajur (1545 m), on the border with Italy. We take the Italian single trail, 12 km and 1400 vertical meters of pure pleasure. The trail starts technically and ends in rolling Alpine meadows. We arrive in San Pietro al Natisone, time for a well-deserved break at the gelateria. After recovering from the trail we get in the car and drive north. We can drive straight to our hotel in Cerklje, or take a trail along the way.

Day 6 – Trail riding in Krvavec

We spend the day in bike park Krvavec and surroundings. From the top of the gondola 6 trails start with a height difference of 600 meters. After a long day at the bike park we drive back to our hotel in Cerklje.

Day 7 – Cross country or bike park

We decide the content of the last day on the basis of the wishes and the energy of the group. We can immediately drive back to Kranjska Gora and dive the bike park there for another day. Or we choose the Kofce Trail. An 8 kilometer long technical single trail that we reach with a climb of 1000 altimeters. The last night we stay in Kranjska Gora, where we end the journey well in a cozy restaurant.

Day 8 – Return journey

After breakfast it is time to say goodbye and we start the journey back to the Netherlands.

Stunning nature and trails

If you are an experienced mountain biker looking for a real challenge and adventure, Slovenia is the place to be. The mountains are untouched and varied. Winding trails over the ridge lead to rolling alpine meadows. To finish on a technical trail full of switchbacks in a dense forest. All while enjoying the view of the impressive Triglav Mountains. Every evening is relaxed, with good company and delicious food.

Level of this trip

The journey to Slovenia is all about descending. Riding as many cool singletracks as possible for a week. The vast majority of the altimeters will be made with a ski lift or shuttle. A single trail can only be reached under your own power. A good cycling condition is therefore required. The trails we ride are built up in terms of level. We start relaxed, but are looking for more and more challenges. From long flowing descents to technical segments with switchbacks and drops. With a gradual build-up and feedback, we give you the opportunity to improve your skills during the week. This trip is for intermediate, advanced and expert levels.
