Straight through the Harz
The Harz is the northernmost low mountain range in Germany. For many Dutch MTB’ers, the Harz Mountains are still a relatively unknown mountain bike mecca. That is strange, because the wooded and mountainous area is only a 4-hour drive from Utrecht and has many mountain bike options for every level. During this journey through the Harz you will discover the wooded nature reserve together with Epique and a lot of altitude meters are made. We descend over challenging trails and in the local bike park. The Harz is ideal for a complete and challenging weekend of mountain biking!
Cross country tour in the Harz Mountains
- Lovely and varied mountain bike terrain
- Only 4 hours drive from Utrecht
- Cross country tour for all levels
- Multi-day tour and bike parks combined in one trip
Trekking through the Harz
We spend a long weekend with our bikes through the Harz. During this trip we will of course pay attention to your MTB skills, but that will not be the focus this weekend. The Harz Mountains have a beautiful environment, we would like to show you as much as possible. The area has a rich culture and therefore an extensive network of paths, roads and single trails. You need exactly that infrastructure for a long and challenging mountain bike weekend. The network consists of no less than 2,200 kilometers of trails and MTB paths. In addition to flowie single trails over crackling pine needles, you will find fierce, blocky trails over rocky surfaces with many drop-offs. We have explored this huge MTB network and selected the most beautiful trails and paths for an unforgettable cross country weekend in the Harz. This weekend we will of course climb the highest mountain in the Harz, the Brocken, with a height of almost 1,150 meters.
In 3 days Dwarz through the Harz
Day 1 – Arrival and warming up at bike park Hahnenklee
On Friday morning you are expected at the 4 * hotel in Hahnenklee. The hotel is located at the foot of the bike park of the same name. We check in at the hotel and get changed. While enjoying coffee and apple strudel, we start the program with a short introduction and briefing. In the early afternoon we leave for a drive around Hahnenklee. We conclude the first day with a descent through the local bike park.
Hahnenklee, our first overnight stop, is a small village in the middle of the Harz and lies at the foot of the Bocksberg. The Bocksberg is transformed into a serious bike park in spring and summer. The village attracts many mountain bikers in the summer months, which ensures a very sporty atmosphere.
Day 2 – Drive to Braunlage
The next morning we drive to the village of Braunlage, located at the foot of the 972 meter high Wurmsberg. The Wurmsberg is known for its long gondola lift, the longest in northern Germany. But the great bike park, the top of which can be reached by gondola, stands out in particular. After a long drive through the Harz Mountains we arrive in Braunlage. If we have any energy left, we take the elevator up again. Just like in Hahnenklee, the hotel is located in the middle of the village and close to the lift.
Day 3 – Ascent of the Brocken
It’s already the last day of the weekend, but certainly not the least. Today we climb the Brocken. After reaching the top, and also the roof of this tour, we descend on a beautiful trail in a northwesterly direction to Goslar. We have lunch here in the authentic center of this medieval city. After lunch we cycle on beautiful trails to the starting point in Hahnenklee. Back in Hahnenklee we spray off our bikes, take a shower, eat a bratwurst and get in the car for the return trip to the Netherlands.
A day in the saddle
The MTB routes are nicely and methodically constructed and consist of several alternatives, with possibilities for extra loops. The climbs in the Harz are between 150 and 400 meters long. We ride in several groups, divided by level and condition. A suitable route has been put together for each group. We make long days on the bike, but don’t overturn ourselves. You ride the climbs at your own pace. At the top there is a neat wait for each other and there is enough time for a break and a photo. On the way we have lunch in one of the picturesque villages of the Harz Mountains.
