Tour ski & sailing trip to Iceland | Epique - Mountain Adventures

Ski & Sail Hornstrandir, Iceland

Iceland

On this eight day trip we will sail with a small group in the fjords of the Hornstrandir peninsula. This uninhabited nature reserve is located in northwestern Iceland, just below the Arctic Circle. The pristine winter landscape is perfect for an epic skiing and snowboarding adventure.

Sailing and skiing

With the boat we are extra mobile; from the water we can reach the most beautiful, most remote places. It is cozy and warm on board. The skipper knows the most beautiful places and can also cook a delicious meal. With Epique you will discover winter Iceland like never before.

Why this trip?

  • Ski to the sea
  • Two guides for group of 10 skiers and boarders
  • Meals prepared with local products and the catch of the day
  • Kayaking or SUP-ping after a tour or on a bad weather day

Ski touring on Hornstrandir

Our adventure takes place in the far northwest of Iceland, on the Hornstrandir peninsula. The area is uninhabited and only accessible from the water. The fjords here are sheltered and because of the relatively calm sea, without high waves, you can spend the night on board. Moreover, you have a good chance of spotting wildlife, such as orcas, seals or even whales. If you are lucky, you can enjoy the breathtaking Northern Lights on a clear night.

Program – Six days of touring the fjords

Day 1 – Travel to Iceland

We fly via Reykjavik to Ísafjörður. We immediately board the Arktika and meet the skipper and crew. In the evening the program for the coming days is discussed.

Day 2 – Crossing to Hornstrandir

In the morning after breakfast we set sail. We start with a 2-4 hour sailing trip and drop anchor. After lunch we go ashore to stretch our legs and take a scenic tour until dusk.

Day 3 to 6 – 5 full ski tour days

We will explore the peninsula for 5 full days. This playground for skiers and snowboarders offers many possibilities and something for everyone. Beautiful scenic tours for novice and intermediate skiers and boarders and for the advanced and experts numerous steep descents and couloirs where you will be challenged both conditionally and technically. With two guides we can split into two groups so that everyone has a great experience at their own level.

Day 7-8 – Last tour and return journey

On this last day we take a short morning tour, after which we sail back to Ísafjörður. After arrival we say goodbye to captain and crew and fly back to Reykjavik. Here we spend the night in a hotel in the center and finish with dinner and a drink. Sunday morning we fly back to Amsterdam. In the afternoon we are back in the Netherlands.

Adventurous skiers and boarders with sea legs

This adventure is for skiers and snowboarders who like to visit new countries and areas to practice their favorite winter sport. Discovering a different culture and nature, meeting new people and making new friends. Not only the tours or the descents, but the combination of all elements makes this kind of travel special and different from all others – perhaps the most beautiful of your life.

Ski to the sea

All tours in Iceland start and end at the beach. The climbs are between 400-1,200 meters, after which a nice descent follows. We make one long or two short trips per day. The terrain in Iceland is very varied; wide, narrow, flat and steep. We ski or snowboard in large walls, through narrow couloirs and on glaciers. Snow conditions range from hard snow, buttery spring snow to deep powder snow. The guides always try to find the best snow and slopes for you.

Touring and sailing in Iceland: Unique experience in untouched nature without meeting anyone.

A wonderful and unique total experience in Iceland. Sailing through totally deserted fjords. Spot beautiful lines and couloirs from the Aurora. Despite limited touring experience under Michiel’s inspiring and resolute leadership, touring was very doable. Departing from sea level definitely helps with this. Very varied descents with a lot of challenge. Despite the absence of fresh powder, fantastic skiing this week. The conviviality on board, the wonderful and very varied group of people, cooking skills and local knowledge of Captain Siggi (and local guide Haukur) complete the picture. So don’t hesitate if you are looking for a wonderfully challenging adventure!
