Pedals de Foc
In the northwest of Catalonia, in the middle of the Pyrenees, we find the only National Park that Catalonia has: Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici. Aigüestortes means ‘winding water’ and indicates what the park is known for, meandering streams, crystal clear mountain lakes and waterfalls. In addition to water, you will find impressive peaks up to 3000 meters. Around the park is a very challenging and above all beautiful route, the Pedals de Foc. 215 km of unpaved trails where you conquer seven cols and 5,540 vertical meters.

From the Netherlands you fly to Barcelona/Toulouse. From the airport you travel individually or we travel as a group with a van to Vielha, the start and end point of the route. On Thursday morning we are dropped off at the starting point and our tour begins. After the first stage we stay in a rural guest house in Buira. The third night, after the second stage, we stay in Espot, a small winter sports village. The 3rd and final stage takes us back to Vielha, where we spend our last night. From Vielha we travel together with the van back to the airport.
215 km in 3 days
Day 1 – outward journey
From the airport we travel together with a bus to Vielha. Here we check in at hotel Tuca. After the introduction, we assemble our mountain bikes and test the material. After dinner we discuss the program for the next few days. We go to bed early to start the first leg rested.
Day 2 – via 3 colletjes to Buira
We start the tour in Vielha, the capital of the Val d’Aran region. Bordering France on one side, the region also includes part of the national park. From Vielha we drive fifteen minutes to the starting point of the route that we will cover in three days. The first day we cycle more than seventy kilometers and we climb the first three cols with a total of 1,900 altimeters. On the first day we drive to Buira, where we stay in a rural guest house right along the route. The guest house, which is run by three generations of a family, has special space for our bicycles. It is cooked according to the local traditional cuisine with seasonal ingredients from the own garden.
Day 3 – over the highest point to Espot
On day three we leave Buira early again. Today there are three cols on the program including the most challenging of this tour, Col de la Portella (2,269 m.). We reach the top by climbing more than 1,000 meters continuously. At the top you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Pyrenees. We descend to Espot where we stay the third night.
Day 4 & 5 – final stage of the Pedals de Foc
The last stage, of more than 60 km and 1,318 altimeters, takes us back to Vielha. We drive through the Gerdar forest and climb the long, but not heavy, Pla de Beret. From the top of 1,904 meters follows the last long descent to Vielha. We check in at the same hotel as the first night. After freshening up we close the tour and celebrate the successful completion of the Pedals de Foc. The next morning, after breakfast, we are taken back to the airport. At Schiphol it is time to say goodbye.
