Olympus Performance

Three magical locations in Greece, one unforgettable Enduro journey. Pelion is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in Greece and is a popular tourist attraction all year round. Several paths give access to the coves and countless sand and pebble beaches nestled between lush green slopes. More centrally located is Meteora, a rock formation with one of the largest and steepest complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. The six (of the original twenty-four) monasteries are built on immense natural pillars and hilly round boulders that dominate the area.

Mountain biking on Olympus

Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, has had its own magical attraction ever since the gods lived there. It is part of the Olympus massif and is one of the highest peaks in Europe in terms of topographical prominence. Olympus is notable in Greek mythology as the home of the Greek gods, on the top of Mytikas. It is also known for its exceptional biodiversity and rich flora. It has been a National Park since 1938, the first in Greece. It is also a World Biosphere Reserve. Every year thousands of visitors admire the fauna and flora, tour the slopes and climb the peaks.

Day program

Day 1 – arrival

Arrival at Athens or Thessaloniki airport and immediate departure to Pelion, our first place of residence. Depending on the arrival time, we take some time to settle in the rooms. Main briefing and dinner to follow. When we have time, we prepare the bikes and put them in the shed. Our accommodation is in Sykia, they are comfortable apartments right on the sea. The restaurant that we have reserved for you in the area is also excellent. Sykia is a small family run business between 2 villages, Kato Gatzea and Kala Nera whose location is ideal for walking. They have many small shops, cafeterias, restaurants and mini market for essentials.

Day 2 – The Coastline of the Pagasitic Gulf

If we didn’t have time to get the bikes ready the previous day, we’ll do it in the morning, so we’re ready on time at 07:30. We kick off our route at 9:00 AM and head south along the shoreline of the Pagasitic Gulf. The path leads us on rural dirt roads used by the locals to take small paths to their fields through the olive groves to their fields. It has no lengthy climbs or major technical difficulties. It is a very pleasant route with parts passing directly by the sea.
Distance: 25km
Height: 350m

Day 3 – Traditional Greek Villages

Our 2nd route is again very different, we climb in height and reach the mountain villages and traditional Greek settlements. The first village is Agios Georgios, followed by Vyzitsa, Pinakates and Milies. In the first picturesque village of Vyzitsa we stop in the square under the big plane tree for coffee. In Milies we will make a short stop to see the village church with its beautiful frescoes, a very old church dating back to 1400A.D. was built. Part of the route will also be the railway connecting the villages to the city of Volos. The railway is now only in use on weekends for sightseeing, but it was once vital to the area. Back at the hotel, we prepare our bikes and equipment for the journey to Olympus. Overnight: Olympus
Distance: 40 km
Altitude: 750m

Day 4 – Olympus

What will be unforgettable in Olympus, aside from the routes, is the accommodation. The special thing about the accommodation in Pelion the first days of the trip was that the dip in the sea before or after the ride was easily accessible and the cuisine is Mediterranean. At Olympus we find ourselves in an environment of absolute silence in the accommodation Ktima Bellou and the cuisine of the restaurant in itself should be a decisive reason for someone to travel there. Our first route to Olympus starts at 9:00 AM and we initially head to the Voulgara Peak where from there we have a view of the highest peaks of Olympus which we will visit the next day. Then we follow a forest road to Kokkinopilos and Livadi the cattle villages in the area, returning to the Bellou estate. Overnight: Olympus
Distance: 35km
Height: 550m

Day 5 – with 4x4s to 2000m

Early in the morning we are picked up by 4×4 cars and we drive on the rough dirt road to the peaks, to an altitude of 2000 m. We unload the bicycles from the cars and continue pedaling between the peaks to an altitude of 2500 meters, where the emergency shelter of Christakis is located. After a short stop we continue the uphill path that leads us to the passage under the 2nd highest peak. There we have to push the bikes for 1.5 km at a tough climb. Arriving at the saddle, we regroup and descend south-east through small alpine meadows. The path that leads us to the village where our route ends is very old and engraved by nomadic shepherds and pilgrims. The village square where our route ends is famous for its meat cuisine. This day ends under the plane tree in the main square of Karya. We return to the Bellou estate and prepare the bicycles and cars for departure to Meteora. Our departure is early in the morning. Overnight: Olympus

Distance: 30km
Height: 850m

Day 6 – Meteora

We will have to drive 2.5 hours to Meteora… But when the huge boulders appear in front of us, we have already forgotten the fatigue of the road and we will explore the paths between the rocks with the old monasteries. Meteora has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and it has a unique landscape because in the distant past the Thessalian Plain was a large lake. As soon as we arrive, we start our ride. The flow of the trails is excellent and the view of the rocks is magical. In the afternoon we will visit the town of Kalambaka for lunch in a restaurant with excellent local wines. If there is time, we will visit the natural history museum. Overnight: Kalambaka
Distance: 35km
Altitude: 600m

Day 7 – last trails

The last day of our journey is similar to the first. Relatively short, without long climbs but in a landscape of special beauty. The rocks of Meteora are dominated all around by a beautiful forest. We start with a climb through the periphery road from the cluster of rocks to the point of the perfect view of the Thessalian plain and the monasteries on top of the rocks. The trails leading us back to our hotel have a good flow and end where the settlement begins. After our ride is over, the bikes are taken directly to a nearby washing place and in the afternoon they can be packed up and ready to go. Dinner is held in one of the strangest restaurants in Greece. Decorated with as much kitsch as the owner could find, this is lovely as he doesn’t really want to be kitsch, this is just his sense of style. The food served could not be a greater contrast to the interior, here is one of the best cuisines in Greece.
Distance: 25km
Altitude: 400m

Overnight: Kalambaka

Day 8 – return trip

Satisfied from this magical Enduro journey through ancient times, we depart from the hotel to the airport.

Epique mountainbike reis Griekenland

Along the coast and through the interior

We are cycling this week from three different locations in Greece. It makes this journey varied and challenging. In addition to the many descent meters that we make, we will have to climb parts here and there. Every now and then we have to walk a bit by bike, because the terrain is simply too steep.

Level of this trip

During this enduro journey there is mainly a lot of descending. The trails are technically challenging and very varied. Every day there is also some climbing, but this is minimal compared to one of the other cross country tours. This trip is mainly for the advanced and expert levels.
