Ski and snowboard trip Niseko, Japan | Epique - Mountain Adventures

Freeriding in Niseko, Japan

Japan

Hokkaido, Japan’s northern island, is ideally located on the path of cold air from Siberia. This causes the ski areas on this island to be covered in a thick layer of snow – snow known for being incredibly dry. During this trip we stay overnight near Niseko, christened ‘Powder Capital of the World’ and Japan’s most famous ski destination. Sometimes it seems like it never stops snowing here. From Niseko we can easily reach the most beautiful freeride areas of Hokkaido.

Freeriding in Japan

To get the most out of a ski or snowboard trip to Japan, we want to be flexible. We want to be where the snow falls, be the first at the lift and have tour ski equipment with us to reach first tracks all day long. We spend the night in a central place, close to traditional restaurants and onsen (Japanese hot springs), but especially within driving distance of the most beautiful freeride areas.

In addition to this trip, we are organizing a road trip through Japan. A longer trip where, in addition to Niseko, we also visit the ski areas that are more off the beaten track.

“In Japan, it turned out once again that the level of knowledge and expertise of Epique is unmatched in the Netherlands. Everything is organized smoothly, people know the way to the right places and have good tips. Skiing in Japan is special! Skiing in Japan with Epique is more special!” – Eagle

Our hotel (with its own onsen) is the perfect combination of Eastern atmosphere and Western luxury and is centrally located between the best freeride areas of Hokkaido. The ski resort of Niseko is nearby and a nice side effect is that Moiwa, Rusutsu, Kiroro and Furano can be reached within an hour.

Program – 7 days of freeriding in Japan

During this trip we have our own vans at our disposal. This way we are flexible and we can tailor the program to the weather, snow and the wishes of the group.

Day 1 & 2 – Travel to Hokkaido

On Friday afternoon we gather at Schiphol and fly to Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido. Upon arrival, the vans are ready and we drive to Niseko in two hours. We check in and discuss the program for the coming week in one of Kutchan’s restaurants.

Day 3 to 8 – In search of the Japanese powder snow

For the next six days, we’ll be looking for the best and deepest powder snow in Japan. Depending on weather and snow, we visit the most beautiful freeride areas of Hokkaido. In the morning we mainly go lift-access freeriding to make as many runs as possible. We can make a short tour to score untracked descents even in the afternoon. We end a long freeride day with a drink in one of the nice bars or with a visit to a traditional onsen.

Climbing Mount Yotei

Weather permitting and everyone is up for a challenge, we can climb Mount Yotei – a dormant volcano of almost 1,900 meters. A tough climb that is rewarded with an impressive view and an unforgettable descent.

Day 9 – The last freeride day

We drive back to Sapporo and visit Teine, the Olympic ski area. At the end of the afternoon we drive into the metropolis and check in at a hotel in the center. We end the trip in style – in a good restaurant and the vibrant nightlife of Sapporo.

Day 10 – Back home

Unfortunately, there is no time to sleep off our daze. Our flight leaves early and arrives in Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon.
