Cross Country Turkish Carian Trail
The first impression you get of Turkey is densely packed beaches and full all-inclusive hotels. But nothing is less true! Turkey is an undiscovered diamond in the rough when it comes to endless nature. Especially the southwest coast, on the Gulf of Gökova, offers all kinds of possibilities for an unforgettable mountain bike adventure. The weather is here as expected – lovely! Every day blue bird and a cooling breeze from the sea. Besides the fact that we cycle a lot this week, we enjoy the rich and old culture, the varied nature and the extensive Turkish cuisine.
Cross country trip through Turkey
- An adventurous journey for beginners and slightly advanced
- Overnight stays in authentic and cozy Turkish hotels
- Breathtaking panoramic views over the sea
This week we follow the Carian Trail, in Turkish Karia Yolu. This trail with a length of 850 kilometers runs along the southwestern coastline of Turkey. Together with our Turkish partner we have mapped out the 8-day route. In 6 days we drive east along the rocky southern coastal strip from Bodrum to Dalyan. With great care and help from our Turkish partner, we have selected the hotels for this trip, an important aspect of this trip. The hotels are authentic, small, cozy and personal. Every day we find ourselves in a new environment and we are surprised by the Turkish culture and hospitality.
6 days along the coast
Day 1 – outward journey
From Amsterdam we fly to Bodrum, a southern seaside resort in Turkey. We are welcomed by our Turkish partners who will support us throughout the journey. We check in at an authentic hotel located on the coast. In the evening we prepare our equipment and after a first briefing we go to bed to prepare ourselves physically for the impressive week to come.
Day 2 & 3 – Bodrum area
We are slowly building up the week and don’t have to move house for the first few days. The area around Bodrum simply has so much beauty to offer that this is not necessary yet. The first two days we drive a tour around Bodrum. The environment in the south of Turkey is hilly. No meter is flat and that means that there will be a lot of climbing. We gain altitude on wider gravel roads and descend on crisp single trails that end at secluded coves.
Day 4 – to Çökertme Bay
On the fourth day we trek from Bodrum to Çökertme Bay. After a few flat miles to warm up, we turn inland to the north. We gain more and more altitude and reach an altitude of 600 meters above sea level. Here we have a breathtaking view over the Gulf of Gökova. After a spectacular descent over a rocky surface, we arrive in Çökertme Bay. In this small fishing village with pebble beaches we will stay the night. We enjoy a meal of seafood fresh from the sea on the terrace of the picturesque hotel.
Day 5 – to Ören
After a nutritious breakfast on the beach we immediately start climbing. It goes up and down all day long. The more we drive inland, the more technical the terrain gets. At the highest point of the day, we have time to catch our breath over a typical Turkish lunch. After lunch we start the flowie downhill run that takes us back to the coast and the town of Ören. Here we take a refreshing dip in the Aegean Sea.
Day 6 – to Akyaka
Today we reach the roof of the route with an altitude of 1000 meters, this is also the highest point along this coastline. On our way to the top we pass through orange groves and small farms. After a spectacular trail over the ridge of the mountain, we descend to the coastal town of Akyaka. If we arrive in Akyaka on time and have energy left, we can still try a kitesurfing session along the coast.
Day 7 – to Dalyan
It is already our last cycling day, but certainly not the least. It is perhaps the most beautiful day of the route in terms of natural beauty. After a few flat kilometers we drive into a beautiful nature reserve consisting of old forests. During the ride we cross some winding rivers a few times. When the forest opens up more, we reach Lake Köyceğiz. This mountain lake offers us some welcome relief. We drive along the lake and downstream follow the river that ends at the finish of our route; historic Dalyan. We take a dip in the sea and enjoy our performance! After a well-deserved Turkish dinner we go to bed tired and satisfied.
Day 8 – return trip
After breakfast we check out and leave for Dalyan airport. We say goodbye to our Turkish escorts and fly back to Amsterdam.
