Splitboarding around the Heidelberger Hütte – Vincent
The first day we meet our guide Gijs-Jan and we pack our bags with all the stuff for the coming days. We will first spend a day on the slopes and then go to a hut with splitboards and descend there and spend the night. Gijs-Jan shows us the most beautiful off-piste spots in the area where he surprisingly still manages to find good snow for the time of year (end of April). At the end of the day we look for a nice place to get ready and then our splitboard adventure begins.
After making the first meters on the split-board we arrive in the Heidelberger Hutte. This hiker’s cabin is far away from civilization, you do not have telephone reception there, so you are at the mercy of nature and the other adventurers around you. After a good meal, a few games of cards and having made a plan for the next day, we go to bed in our bunk bed.
To get up early..
As soon as the sun rises, everyone wakes up and everyone eats a quick breakfast and then starts the climb as quickly as possible. After all, you want to arrive at the top at the perfect time so that the descent will take place over perfectly thawed snow. All around us, groups of people leave for other peaks and places on the mountain. Walking is initially a bit disappointing. The sun is shining and it is very warm. We walk one after the other in a t-shirt up the mountain and after about three hours we arrive at the top.
Worth the effort
I’ve never had to work so hard to get to the top of a mountain in all my life. It’s been a long time since I was this broken. But once you’ve reached the top with your group, you’ll have forgotten all the blisters and muscle aches – what an AMAZING feeling! After a short break we get our boards ready for the descent and we have a dream descent – all alone – with no other people in sight – WHAT A FEELING!
What an experience to be able to have so much fun off the slopes so late in the season. Splitboarding is really a special sport and has really opened up a new world of possibilities for me. I am sure that we will do many more tours and I can wholeheartedly recommend every fanatic winter sports enthusiast to give this a try!
